Identify the forum. Pick the court the matter is in — the tariff scale differs for Magistrates', Regional & High Court.

Choose the scale. Party-and-party for taxed costs against the other side; attorney-and-client for what you bill your own client.

Match each attendance to a tariff item — drafting, perusal, attendance, appearance, travel.

Capture the units (pages, folios, 15-minute blocks, or per day) — the calculator does the multiplication.

Apply the prescribed rate where interest is claimed (currently 11.75% per annum).

Add VAT & disbursements, then push the lines straight into a Bill of Costs for taxation.
